Best for a long weekend. Hit the beach, the boardwalk, and the best attractions without overscheduling.

Day 1 — Beach + Boardwalk

  • Set up beach chairs between 2nd Ave N and 14th Ave N -- lifeguards, fewer crowds, easy restaurant access.
  • Myrtle Beach Boardwalk -- 1.2 miles of oceanfront. Ride the SkyWheel at sunset (187-foot Ferris wheel with enclosed, air-conditioned gondolas).
  • Dinner: crab legs at Captain George's -- all-you-can-eat seafood buffet, ~$40/adult, kids half price. Not gourmet, but fun.

Day 2 — Attractions Day

  • Ripley's Aquarium -- underwater shark tunnel, touch tank with horseshoe crabs and stingrays. Go first thing in the morning or after 4 PM to avoid crowds.
  • Broadway at the Beach -- outdoor entertainment complex with restaurants, shops, WonderWorks (upside-down house with science exhibits), and mirror maze. The Dragon boat ride is a solid 10 minutes of fun.
  • Eat at Liberty Tap Room (inside Broadway) for actual good food, or drive 5 min to Croaker's Spot for local seafood.

Day 3 — Mini Golf + Beach Morning

  • Mt. Atlanticus Mini Golf -- consistently rated the best mini-golf in Myrtle Beach. 36-hole course with waterfalls and mountain terrain. $11/round. Go before 11 AM.
  • Final beach morning -- swim, collect shells, last round of boogie boarding.

The full Myrtle Beach experience. Beach days, attractions, a side trip to Brookgreen Gardens, go-karts, and an optional dinner show.

Day 1 — Beach + Boardwalk

  • Set up between 2nd Ave N and 14th Ave N -- lifeguards, fewer crowds than the boardwalk area.
  • Walk the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. Ride the SkyWheel at sunset.
  • Dinner: Captain George's all-you-can-eat seafood buffet, or Sea Captain's House for a more classic beachfront experience.

Day 2 — Brookgreen Gardens + Huntington Beach

  • Brookgreen Gardens (Murrells Inlet, 20 min south) -- sculpture garden, wildlife preserve, and lowcountry zoo. The butterfly house is magical for kids 3+. Boat tour through the creek often spots alligators from a safe distance.
  • This is the sleeper hit of a Myrtle Beach trip. Give it 3 hours.
  • Huntington Beach State Park (adjacent) -- quieter, more natural beach. The Atalaya Castle ruins are fun for kids to explore. Good break from the boardwalk scene.

Day 3 — Water Park Day

  • Myrtle Waves Water Park -- largest water park in South Carolina. Lazy river, wave pool, multiple slide towers. ~$30/person for a full day.
  • Pro tip: eat a big breakfast and do a late lunch after. Park food is overpriced.
  • Alternative: Splashes Oceanfront Waterpark -- smaller, right on the beach, good for half a day.

Day 4 — North Myrtle Beach + Barefoot Landing

  • Barefoot Landing -- shopping and dining complex on a lake. Alligator Adventure is here -- one of the largest alligator parks in the US with live feedings. Great for ages 4+.
  • Cherry Grove Pier -- rent a rod ($10) and let kids fish for an hour. Even if they catch nothing, they love it.
  • Quieter beach time at North Myrtle Beach -- less crowded than the main strip.

Day 5 — Go-Karts + Beach

  • Morning beach time.
  • The Track Family Fun Parks -- go-karts (various tracks for different ages), bumper boats, mini golf, kiddie rides. The Wild Woody track has elevated curves for kids 10+. Buy the unlimited wristband if staying 2+ hours.
  • Optional evening: Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament -- jousting, eating with hands, cheering for your knight. Goofy and wonderful. Best for ages 4+.

Day 6 — Chill Day + Departure

  • Myrtle Beach State Park -- quieter beach inside a maritime forest. Nature trail, fishing pier, fewer crowds. Good for a relaxed final morning.
  • Optional: drive 30 min south to Calabash, NC ("Seafood Capital of the World"). Ella's of Calabash or Beck's for legendary lightly battered fried shrimp.

🏖️ Best Family Beaches

The Grand Strand has 60 miles of beach, but not all stretches are equal. Here are the best spots for families.

Main Myrtle Beach Area

Myrtle Beach Boardwalk Area (2nd-14th Ave N)

Lifeguards Restaurants nearby SkyWheel

The classic Myrtle Beach experience. Wide sand, gentle waves, lifeguards on duty. Easy access to boardwalk restaurants and the SkyWheel. Set up between 2nd and 14th Ave N for the best combo of amenities and space.

Myrtle Beach State Park

A quieter stretch of beach inside a maritime forest. Nature trail through the woods, a fishing pier, and far fewer crowds than the main strip. Perfect for a relaxed morning.

South of Myrtle Beach

Huntington Beach State Park

Natural Quiet Castle ruins

Much quieter and more natural than the main strip. Adjacent to Brookgreen Gardens. The Atalaya Castle ruins are fun for kids to explore. Great for families wanting a break from the boardwalk scene.

Pawleys Island

Upscale Uncrowded Different vibe

North Myrtle Beach

Cherry Grove Beach

Fishing pier Family-friendly Less crowded

A quieter section with a fishing pier where you can rent rods ($10) and let kids fish for an hour. Less hectic than the main Myrtle Beach strip. Barefoot Landing is nearby for dinner and entertainment.

🍽️ Where to Eat

Myrtle Beach has more restaurants than you can count. Most are mediocre chains. Here are the ones worth your time.

Sea Captain's House -- $$

Beachfront, old-school, excellent. One of the few restaurants in Myrtle Beach with real character. Seafood that's been consistently good for decades. Reservations recommended.

Mr. Fish -- $-$$

The locals' go-to for fresh seafood. No frills, just good fish. The kind of place tourists walk past on the way to a chain restaurant and shouldn't.

Croaker's Spot -- $-$$

Local seafood spot 5 minutes from Broadway at the Beach. Way better than anything inside the Broadway complex. Fresh catch, good prices.

Captain George's -- $$

The Myrtle Beach all-you-can-eat seafood buffet experience. ~$40/adult, kids half price. Crab legs, shrimp, oysters. It's not gourmet -- it's fun. Kids love the variety.

Liberty Tap Room -- $$

The best actual food inside the Broadway at the Beach complex. Good beer selection, solid menu. When the family can't agree, this is the safe bet.

Ella's of Calabash -- $

In Calabash, NC (30 min south) -- the "Seafood Capital of the World." Lightly battered fried shrimp that sets the standard. Worth the drive on your last day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Myrtle Beach good for toddlers?

Great for toddlers. The beach has gentle waves, wide flat sand for sand castles, and many hotels and resorts have kiddie pools and splash areas. Brookgreen Gardens and the aquarium both work for the under-4 set. The boardwalk has a small amusement area with toddler rides. The main challenge is sunscreen -- the sun is strong.

How many days do you need in Myrtle Beach with kids?

4-5 days is the sweet spot. Enough for 2-3 beach days, an attraction day, and a side trip. A full week works if you don't mind slower-paced beach days (and most families don't). 3 days feels rushed -- you barely settle into vacation mode.

What's the best time to visit Myrtle Beach with family?

Late May or September. Water temperatures are warm enough for swimming (75°F+), crowds are thinner than peak summer, and hotel prices drop 30-40% compared to July. Mid-June through August is great weather but the area is at maximum capacity -- especially July 4th week.

Is Myrtle Beach tacky?

Parts of it, yes. The main strip (Ocean Boulevard) has t-shirt shops, wax museums, and neon signs. But that's part of the charm for a family vacation -- kids love the energy. If you want a quieter experience, stay in Pawleys Island or Litchfield Beach (20-30 minutes south). Same ocean, completely different vibe.
